Six Key Highlights of Argentina's Food Safety Law Amendments

ECHEMI 2024-12-17

On December 13, 2024, the Argentine National Food Safety Commission released six proposals to amend the current Argentine Food Code (CAA). These proposals include:

  1. Approval of Monk Fruit Extract as a sweetener for use in foods, with a maximum usage limit of 8 grams per kilogram of food.
  2. Addition of Sake as a Category in the standards for fermented alcoholic beverages, specifying physicochemical and quality requirements: alcohol content between 12% and 26%, methanol content not exceeding 300 mg/100 ml, and products containing flavoring substances to be labeled as "Flavored Sake."
  3. Revision of Dehydrated Maca Powder Standards, specifically adding hygiene requirements that Salmonella must not be detected.
  4. Update of Hygiene Requirements for Meat Processing Plants, stating that during the cooling process, separated meat should avoid contact with each other, walls, and the floor. It also allows meat products from different sources to be stored in the same cooling room, provided they do not touch.
  5. Approval of Chia Seed Concentrate as a new food ingredient, with corresponding specifications.

The deadline for public comments and feedback on these proposals is January 12, 2025.
