15 New Measures to Boost China Western Development

ECHEMI 2025-01-06

The Chinese government officially announced on Sunday that it will implement 15 new measures aimed at promoting the development of western provinces through the construction of logistics infrastructure such as ports and aviation hubs. According to official media, the General Administration of Customs pointed out that these measures will help strengthen the integrated development of rail, air, river, and sea transport in western China.

These measures specifically include enhancing the international aviation hub status of cities such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xi'an, and Urumqi, developing comprehensive bonded zones, and connecting these bonded zones with ports and other transportation networks. In addition, some port facilities will be constructed and expanded.

For a long time, the Chinese government has been committed to elevating the economic status of the western region, although economic development in the west is significantly lagging behind that of coastal provinces. However, the ethnic tensions in the region—particularly in Xinjiang—have led Beijing to believe that taking tough security measures to maintain national unity and border stability is necessary, which has drawn criticism from some Western countries.

The Central Political Bureau of China proposed last year to implement a "new urbanization" strategy in the western region to revitalize rural areas, expand poverty alleviation efforts, and strengthen the development of energy resources. At the same time, China is also working to strengthen connections with Europe and South Asia through trade corridors, including railway freight routes.
