Abu Dhabi Invests 1.7 Billion USD to Build First Methanol Plant Scheduled for 2028
On February 3, TA'ZIZ, founded by UAE energy giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and local sovereign investment firm ADQ, announced an investment of 1.7 billion USD to construct the UAE's first methanol plant. This project marks a significant step for the UAE in the chemical industry.
The new facility will be located in the Al Ruwais Industrial City in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region and is scheduled for completion in 2028. Samsung E&A has been awarded the EPC contract as the engineering contractor. The plant aims to produce 1.8 million tons of methanol annually, making it the UAE's first methanol production base powered by clean energy and one of the most energy-efficient methanol plants globally.
This project is the first step in TA'ZIZ's plan to create a world-class chemical complex in the Al Dhafra region. In the initial phase, the goal is to achieve an annual production of 4.7 million tons of chemicals by 2028, including methanol, low-carbon ammonia, polyvinyl chloride, dichloroethane, vinyl chloride monomer, and caustic soda. Several of these chemicals will be produced in the UAE for the first time, further boosting the region's chemical industry.
This investment will not only spur economic growth in the UAE but also lay the foundation for future sustainable development, showcasing the country's competitiveness and potential in the global chemical market.
