Evonik and Fuhua Establish Joint Venture to Produce Hydrogen Peroxide in China
Evonik and Fuhua Tongda Chemicals Company (Fuhua) have established a joint venture in Leshan, Sichuan Province, to produce and sell hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in China.
The new company, called Evonik Fuhua New Materials (Sichuan) Co., Ltd., will be owned 51% by Evonik and 49% by Fuhua. The joint venture will use Fuhua's industrial-grade H2O2 to produce specialty-grade hydrogen peroxide for applications such as solar panels, semiconductors and food packaging. The first products are expected to be on the market in the first half of 2026.
The cooperation combines Evonik's strong global market position and peroxide expertise with Fuhua's local infrastructure and network in China. The new company was established based on a license agreement signed by the two parties in November 2023, under which Evonik licenses its H2O2 technology to Fuhua to build a 200,000-ton hydrogen peroxide large-scale plant. The plant will supply the new joint venture with H2O2 for further purification.
“This next step in our successful collaboration with Fuhua is critical to our strategy in the Asia Pacific region,” said Lauren Kjeldsen, head of Evonik’s Smart Materials division. “Our Active Oxygen business line aims to provide specialized solutions to some of the most important challenges facing a growing population, such as green energy and electronics.”
“Evonik is a key partner for us and this joint venture marks a new level in our collaboration,” said Zhang Hua, Chairman of Fuhua. “We look forward to combining Fuhua’s own resource and recycling advantages with Evonik’s advanced technology and experience to jointly bring competitive products to market.”
Specialty hydrogen peroxide grades can be used in a variety of future-oriented applications. For example, hydrogen peroxide is a key ingredient in the production of solar photovoltaic cells. It is used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant and oxidant in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Or it can be used as a sterilant in aseptic packaging to extend the shelf life of food and beverages. Because only water and oxygen remain after hydrogen peroxide decomposes, it leaves minimal residue compared to some chemical alternatives.
