The 16^th Edition of Asia Pharma Expo (APE) 2025 successfully concluded at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre(BCFEC), Purbachal, Dhaka, reinforcing its position as one of South Asia’s premier exhibitions for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. During the event, leading industry experts, government officials, and key stakeholders discussed Bangladesh’s rapidly growing pharmaceutical industry, valued at $3.5 billion, with a 15-18% annual growth rate. Baby Rani Karmakar, Director General (Joint Secretary), Export Promotion Bureau(EPB), Ministry of Commerce, People's Republic of Bangladesh, highlighted that “With a 17.3% increase in exports reaching $205.48 million in 2023-24, Bangladesh has solidified its place as a global pharmaceutical brand.”

Major General Dr. Mohammad Yousuf, Director General, Directorate General of Drug Administration, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Bangladesh, reinforced Bangladesh’s growing pharmaceutical capabilities, stating, “Bangladeshi pharmaceutical companies are now recognized globally, holding GMP certifications from US-FDA, EU-GMP, and Health Canada. Our next goal is achieving WHO Maturity Level 3 for vaccine regulation to boost exports further.”

Zakia Sultana, Senior Secretary, Ministry of Industries, People's Republic of Bangladesh stressed the importance of API production, noting that “If Bangladesh captures just 1% of the $4.4 trillion global generic drug market, our export revenue could reach $4 billion.”

Md. Saidur Rahman, Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, People's Republic of Bangladesh, highlighted the remarkable growth of the Bangladesh pharmaceutical industry, “The Bangladesh pharmaceutical industry has met local demand through domestic production while also making a significant impact on export earnings.”

S.M. Shafiuzzaman, Secretary General, BAPI, provided the closing remarks, reflecting on the industry’s achievements and future aspirations. International exhibitors Klaus N. Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry in Brief

The pharmaceutical industry in Bangladesh has experienced remarkable growth, evolving from a primarily import-dependent sector to a significant global player in generic drug manufacturing. From a modest market size of approximately USD 25 million in 1982, the industry expanded to around USD 3 billion by June 2020. Driven by increasing domestic demand and strategic initiatives, the market is projected to surpass USD 6 billion by 2025.

Bangladeshi pharmaceutical companies have significantly broadened their global footprint, exporting to about 157 countries, including regulated markets like the USA, Germany, and the UK. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, pharmaceutical exports reached a record high, with a notable 52.45% increase to $92.58 million during the July-November period, compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.

The sector is one of the most technologically advanced within Bangladesh's economy, contributing approximately 1% to the nation's GDP. The implementation of the Drug Control Ordinance in 1982 accelerated the industry's development, enabling local manufacturers to produce high-quality medicines that meet 98% of domestic demand.

To further enhance self-reliance and global competitiveness, Bangladesh has invested in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production. The establishment of the API Industrial Park aims to reduce import dependency, lower production costs, and promote research and development for new APIs. This initiative is expected to boost export potential and attract foreign direct investment through joint ventures with international pharmaceutical companies.

As Bangladesh approaches its graduation from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) status in 2026, the pharmaceutical industry faces challenges such as the cessation of patent-free pharmaceutical production. However, with strategic investments in API production, research and development, and continued government support, the industry is well-positioned to capture a significant share of the global generic drug market, which is valued at approximately USD 440 billion. Achieving just 1% of this market could translate to export revenues of about USD 4 billion.
