Findings from Brazil Reveal Impact of Ultra-Processed Foods on Infant Gut Health
A groundbreaking study conducted in Brazil involving 728 infants under one year old has uncovered alarming effects of ultra-processed food consumption on gut microbiome diversity and abundance. This impact is particularly pronounced in infants who are not breastfed.
Published in the scientific journal Clinical Nutrition, the research focused on infants born in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, between 2015 and 2016. Researchers collected and stored stool samples, which were then sent to a specialized facility in South Korea for advanced genetic sequencing. During data collection, they also recorded the infants' height, weight, and dietary habits, including breastfeeding status.
The findings indicate that breastfed infants had a higher abundance of Bifidobacterium, a beneficial bacterium linked to good gut health. In contrast, infants consuming ultra-processed foods—such as packaged snacks, cookies, chocolate drinks, and sodas—exhibited elevated levels of Selimonas and Finegoldia, bacteria commonly found in adolescents and adults with obesity or gastrointestinal diseases.
Lead researcher Marly Cardoso, a professor at the University of São Paulo, emphasized the significance of this study, as it is the first large-scale analysis of the relationship between infant gut microbiota and ultra-processed food consumption during this critical period of immune system development. Despite the remote location of the subjects, ultra-processed foods are prevalent and increasingly replacing traditional diets and breastfeeding.
The study also revealed a higher abundance of Firmicutes in non-breastfed infants, which may lead to early maturation, raising further concerns about health implications. Notably, over 80% of the infants studied began consuming ultra-processed foods within their first year, contradicting WHO guidelines that recommend avoiding such foods before the age of two.
Researchers plan to continue monitoring these children to assess the long-term health effects of ultra-processed food consumption, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and dietary changes in infant nutrition.
