Kronos Reports Impressive 2024 Earnings with 33% Production Increase Driving Revenue to $1.887 Billion
On March 6, Kronos, a leading titanium dioxide supplier, released its 2024 financial report, showcasing a strong performance over the past year. The company achieved $1.887 billion in revenue, marking a 13.20% increase year-over-year, and recorded an operating profit of $122.9 million, successfully turning a profit for the year. This achievement highlights Kronos's competitive strength in the industry, reflecting a recovery in global titanium dioxide demand and advancements in technology.
The report indicates that Kronos produced a total of 535,000 tons of titanium dioxide in 2024, a 33.42% increase from 401,000 tons in 2023. The annual sales reached 504,000 tons, up 20.29% from the previous year. Several factors contributed to this significant growth. Firstly, market demand fully recovered in 2024, particularly in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific regions, where the construction, automotive, and plastics industries drove titanium dioxide consumption. Additionally, Kronos improved its capacity utilization to over 93% through technological upgrades and equipment optimization, significantly enhancing production efficiency. Furthermore, declines in energy and raw material costs helped lower production expenses, supporting profit growth.
Kronos operates six production facilities globally, including the Lake Charles plant in Louisiana, Varennes in Canada, and sites in Leverkusen and Nordenham in Germany, Fredrikstad in Norway, and Gent in Belgium. These factories utilize both sulfuric acid and chloride processes, with a combined annual capacity of approximately 600,000 tons. In July 2024, Kronos invested $185 million (plus a potential $15 million in profit sharing) to acquire the remaining 50% of the Louisiana Pigment Company (LPC), making it a wholly-owned subsidiary. LPC's chloride plant in Lake Charles has an annual production capacity of about 78,000 tons. This acquisition not only increased Kronos's output but also strengthened its supply capabilities in the North American market. The financial report revealed that LPC contributed approximately $150 million in revenue post-consolidation, becoming a key driver of annual growth.
However, Kronos faces challenges as well. The average price of titanium dioxide in 2024 decreased by 5% compared to 2023, dropping from around $3,000 per ton to approximately $2,850. This decline was primarily due to adjustments in global market supply and demand balances, along with intensified competition. Although this price drop partially offset the positive effects of increased production and sales, effective cost control and rising sales allowed the company to maintain profitability.
The growth of Kronos aligns closely with global titanium dioxide market trends. According to market research, the global titanium dioxide market is projected to exceed $20 billion in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.3% to 6.6% expected to increase it to between $24 billion and $32 billion by 2029. The Asia-Pacific region leads the market with a 42% share, driven largely by rapid growth in the construction and automotive industries in emerging economies like China and India.
As an essential white pigment in industries such as coatings, plastics, paper, and cosmetics, the demand for titanium dioxide is closely linked to global economic activities. In 2024, the construction sector showed notable recovery, with U.S. housing starts increasing by 5% year-over-year. The stable growth of the construction markets in India and elsewhere has driven demand for titanium dioxide in coatings. Simultaneously, the automotive industry's shift toward electrification has spurred demand for high-performance coatings, increasing titanium dioxide's application in automotive coatings to 15%. Additionally, the cosmetic and food industries are steadily increasing their demand for high-purity titanium dioxide, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, where the annual growth rate is approximately 4%.
Regarding pricing, the global titanium dioxide market saw a fluctuation in 2024, first declining and then rising. Prices dipped to $2,700 per ton in the first half due to inventory pressures, but rebounded to $2,900 per ton in the second half as demand improved and supplies of titanium ore (both rutile and ilmenite) tightened. Market analysts predict that prices could stabilize around $3,000 per ton in 2025, with supply-demand balance becoming the dominant factor.
Kronos's impressive performance in 2024 reflects both successful corporate strategies and the broader recovery and transformation trends within the global titanium dioxide market. The company aims for a sales target of 550,000 tons in 2025, with revenue expected to exceed $2 billion. Driven by demand growth, technological upgrades, and green development, the titanium dioxide industry is entering a new era of opportunity.
