Mounjaro Launches in India Eli Lilly's Game-Changer for Obesity and Diabetes Treatment
On March 20, 2025, Eli Lilly officially launched Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in India, following marketing authorization from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). This innovative medication aims to combat the rising obesity and diabetes crisis in the country, marking a significant step in public health management.
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable treatment designed for adults as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management. It activates both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone receptors, enhancing insulin secretion and improving glycemic control.
With annual sales exceeding $11.5 billion globally in 2024, Mounjaro has rapidly become one of the leading medications in the weight-loss market. Eli Lilly's President for India, Winselow Tucker, emphasized the urgency of addressing obesity and type 2 diabetes as major public health challenges, stating the company's commitment to improving disease management in collaboration with government and industry stakeholders.
As of 2023, nearly 100 million people in India suffer from obesity, while approximately 101 million live with diabetes, highlighting the critical need for effective treatment options. Mounjaro's approval provides a targeted solution that reduces dosing errors and preparation time, facilitating faster interventions in critical care settings.
Industry experts predict that as Eli Lilly continues to innovate, competitors like Novo Nordisk will also launch their GLP-1 products in India, intensifying the competition in this lucrative market. The introduction of Mounjaro is expected to significantly impact treatment strategies for obesity and diabetes, offering healthcare providers a powerful new tool in managing these conditions.
This launch not only showcases Eli Lilly's dedication to addressing pressing health issues but also sets the stage for increased accessibility to effective weight management solutions in India.
