Dow's Silicones Downstream Expansion Project in Zhangjiagang Launches and Drives Market Innovation
On March 20, 2025, Dow's downstream silicones expansion project officially launched in Zhangjiagang. Initiated in June 2023, this project is a crucial part of Dow's ongoing development at the Zhangjiagang site, marking a significant enhancement of its supply chain capabilities and market responsiveness in the Asia-Pacific region.
The newly launched project focuses on fast-growing sectors such as electronics, transportation, renewable energy, packaging, and construction. As global energy transitions accelerate, the demand for high-performance silicone materials continues to rise in the expanding renewable energy supply chain across Asia-Pacific. For instance, in the renewable energy sector, silicones are widely used for sealing photovoltaic modules and protecting wind energy equipment; in the electronics industry, their high-temperature resistance and insulation properties are critical for 5G and semiconductor packaging. By enabling localized production, Dow significantly shortens the supply chain cycle and enhances its responsiveness to customized customer needs, thereby solidifying its competitiveness in the high-end materials market.
Since its inception in 2002, the Zhangjiagang site has developed into one of Dow's largest production bases in the Asia-Pacific region, covering nearly 110 square kilometers and forming a complete supply chain from upstream silicone monomers to downstream high-value-added products. Previously, the site had completed resin expansions, polymer intermediates, and multiple downstream projects; the new project will create synergies with existing capacities, reinforcing the cost and technical advantages of its “integrated production” model.
Dow positions the Asia-Pacific region as the core of its global growth strategy. The ongoing expansion of the Zhangjiagang base not only meets local demand but also serves neighboring markets such as Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. For example, in the electric vehicle sector, China accounts for over 60% of global sales, and Dow's silicone materials are widely utilized in battery sealing and lightweight components; similarly, the surge in renewable energy installations in Southeast Asia will benefit from the release of this base's capacity.
The launch of Dow's Zhangjiagang project reflects a new logic for multinational companies operating in China: deeply integrating into the Chinese supply chain while supporting global markets with Chinese capacity. In the face of rising challenges to globalization, this “made in China for the world” model not only provides Dow with a first-mover advantage but also fosters a deeper integration of China's high-end manufacturing with the global value chain. Looking ahead, as innovation demands in the Asia-Pacific region continue to grow, Dow is likely to further increase its investment in technology development and production capacity, writing a new chapter in the materials industry.
