Ozempic Linked to 2X Increased Risk of Serious Eye Condition in Diabetes Patients

A recent study published in JAMA Ophthalmology has revealed alarming findings regarding Ozempic, a popular diabetes medication. The research indicates that patients taking semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, face more than double the risk of developing a serious eye condition known as nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) after two years of treatment.

The study tracked nearly 175,000 patients with diabetes who received semaglutide compared to an equal number of patients on alternative diabetes medications. Notably, the heightened risk for NAION did not present itself during the first year of treatment but became significantly pronounced thereafter.

Interestingly, the elevated risk associated with semaglutide appeared primarily among women and those specifically using Ozempic. In contrast, patients taking other forms of semaglutide, such as Rybelsus (an oral version) or Wegovy (an obesity treatment), did not exhibit the same increased risk.

This finding adds to previous studies indicating a concerning trend among adults with type 2 diabetes using semaglutide, suggesting a need for further investigation into the long-term safety of this medication. The authors stress that while these retrospective studies highlight potential risks, they do not establish direct causation.

Given the potentially debilitating nature of NAION, which can lead to vision loss, the study underscores the importance of understanding the incidence of this condition and its contributing factors for patients considering semaglutide as a treatment option.
