Novo Nordisk to Phase Out ₹800 Cr Insulin Brand in India Within 6 Months
In a significant shift, Novo Nordisk is set to discontinue its top-selling insulin product, Human Mixtard, in India. This decision aligns with the company’s global strategy to prioritize newer, patented diabetes and weight-loss therapies like Ozempic and Wegovy, which offer higher profitability .
Human Mixtard, a ₹800 crore brand, along with other older insulin products such as Actrapid, Insulatard, Insulin Detemir, Levemir, and Xultophy, will be phased out over the next six months. These products are primarily available in pre-filled disposable pens and cartridges. Novo Nordisk has informed its marketing partner, Abbott India, that these products will be discontinued once current stocks are depleted .
While vial forms of Human Mixtard, Actrapid, and Insulatard will remain available, the transition away from pen devices may pose challenges for patients who prefer the convenience and accuracy of pens over traditional syringes. This move could significantly impact India’s ₹5,000 crore insulin market, especially as Novo Nordisk prepares to introduce its newer therapies in the country .
