FDA to Review Over 950 Food Additives Amid Rising Health Concerns

In a significant move, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced plans to intensify its oversight of chemicals in the U.S. food supply, transitioning from a historically reactive role to a more proactive evaluation process. This initiative aims to address the presence of over 950 additives currently permitted in the U.S. but banned in the European Union, highlighting a substantial regulatory gap. 

Acting Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods, Kyle Diamantas, revealed that the FDA will update its priority list of chemicals for review, focusing on substances like butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and azodicarbonamide (ADA).  ADA, often referred to as the “yoga mat chemical,” is used in bread and baked goods and has been banned in several countries due to potential health risks. 

This initiative aligns with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s broader campaign to combat chronic illnesses by improving the national diet. Kennedy has emphasized the need to eliminate synthetic food colors and promote healthier alternatives, such as natural food dyes derived from red algae and butterfly pea flower extract. 

The FDA plans to release a framework for identifying additional chemicals for review, inviting public input later this month. This approach aims to incorporate international data and public concerns, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation process.
