30 Percent Capacity Boost Flint Group Expands Italian Plant to Meet Soaring Demand for Sustainable Packaging Inks
Flint Group has completed a major expansion of its Caronno resin facility in Italy, increasing annual output by 30% to strengthen supply for nitrocellulose-free inks targeting flexible packaging. This strategic investment comes as the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is set to drive unprecedented demand for recyclable and sustainable solutions.
With over three decades of operation, the Caronno site’s resin output now surpasses 26,000 tons annually, supplying critical intermediates for polyurethane (PU) and acrylic inks. By boosting non-nitrocellulose resin production, Flint Group can ensure stable delivery of its VertixCode and MatrixCode ink lines—products prized for their chemical resistance and compatibility with recycling processes, helping converters prepare for upcoming regulatory changes.
The project also introduced advanced process controls to fine-tune molecular weight distribution, guaranteeing consistent product quality and reinforcing Flint Group’s leadership in the fast-growing PU-based ink segment.
As global nitrocellulose supplies become increasingly strained by surging defense demand and price volatility, this expansion fortifies Flint Group’s vertically integrated supply chain, reducing reliance on unstable raw materials. According to EVP Gonzalo Alas Pumarino, the move underscores Flint Group’s commitment to both supply security and sustainability, enabling customers to confidently navigate evolving environmental standards and market challenges.
