FDA Moves to Revoke 52 Outdated Food Standards Major Changes for Dairy, Canned Goods and Baked Products
On July 16, 2025, the U.S. FDA announced plans to revoke 52 obsolete standards of identity covering a wide range of foods, impacting canned fruits and vegetables, dairy, bakery, pasta, and more. The move is part of a push to modernize food regulations and cut unnecessary red tape.
Key updates include the removal of 11 standards for canned fruits and vegetables no longer found in stores, notably seven standards for fruits artificially sweetened with saccharin or sodium saccharin.
Eighteen standards for dairy products will also be scrapped, affecting various milk, cream, cheese items, and frozen desserts.
An additional 23 standards will be revoked, spanning baked goods, pasta, canned juices, seafood, and food dressings.
The FDA’s decision aims to streamline regulations and encourage innovation, replacing outdated “recipe rules” with more flexible oversight. For businesses and consumers, these changes promise greater transparency and potentially more food choices.
