China Achieves Breakthrough in Wearable Seal Coating Technology 8 New Materials Lead Global High Temp Turbine Innovation
China Metallurgical Group has announced a major leap in advanced abradable seal coating technology, ending a long-standing bottleneck that restricted the nation’s high-end equipment sector and propelling China to the forefront of this critical field.
Abradable seal coatings play a key role in turbines and jet engines, boosting efficiency by 1%, slashing energy use by 1.5%, and vastly extending component lifespan. Even a 1% efficiency gain can require a decade of worldwide research effort, highlighting the magnitude of this achievement.
Developing these coatings is notoriously complex: they must withstand extreme heat and high-speed friction, offer "softness" to protect rotors, and maintain strong adhesion to avoid flaking—a balance that has stumped global researchers for decades.
After over 20 years of dedicated R&D supported by national programs, the technical team has cracked the code, establishing a high-temperature, high-speed test platform to uncover the wear mechanisms and optimize component synergy. The result is a pioneering “framework and abradable component synergy” design, conquering the full innovation chain from materials to application.
Today, the team has developed eight long-life coatings covering all temperature ranges, with performance recognized at the international level. Their self-designed test rig simulates 1200°C temperatures at 450 m/s, with precise wear debris collection, matching the world’s most advanced capabilities. These successes lay the foundation for China’s first fully self-controlled, high-performance abradable seal coating technology system.
