Mitsubishi Chemical Unveils Plastic-to-Oil Plant in Japan Targets ISCC PLUS Certification

ECHEMI 2025-08-03

Mitsubishi Chemical and Enex have completed a pioneering chemical recycling facility in Kamisu, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, utilizing Mura Technology’s supercritical hydrothermal process to break down waste plastics into oil. This recycled oil will be fed into existing petroleum refining and naphtha cracking units, giving rise to new fuels, chemicals, and plastics.

The partners will seek ISCC PLUS certification, enabling them to market a range of sustainable products derived from circular oil. Mitsubishi and Enex plan to advance the plastic-to-oil initiative, accelerating Japan’s transition to a circular economy and cleaner energy.

This project marks a significant step in transforming plastic waste into valuable resources, supporting both carbon reduction and sustainable manufacturing goals.
