World’s Largest Green Ammonia Plant 2.4 Million Tons Project Signed by China Chemical in Namibia

ECHEMI 2025-08-03

On July 29, China National Chemical Engineering No.7 Construction (CC7) and Hyphen Hydrogen signed a landmark FEED+EPC contract for a green ammonia facility in Namibia, targeting annual output of 2.4 million tons. The agreement marks a major step in global renewable energy, with both parties pledging deeper cooperation to accelerate Africa’s green transformation.

Namibia, rich in wind and solar resources, sees this project as central to its strategy of becoming a global leader in green hydrogen and ammonia. China Chemical’s breakthroughs in coupling hydrogen energy with traditional fuels and new materials position it as a key player in global energy transition. Hyphen CEO Raffinetti praised China Chemical’s expertise, expressing confidence that the project will help Namibia become Africa’s green energy hub and drive rapid economic growth.

The $10 billion initiative, backed by a landmark FIA agreement signed in May 2023, will deliver 2 million tons of green hydrogen-based ammonia. Hyphen is responsible for technology, financing, and operations, while the Namibian government offers land, legal, and regulatory support.

The project will be built in five phases, with the first 1 million tons of green ammonia expected by 2027 and full 2.4 million-ton output reached by 2029. This model is set to become a global benchmark for large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia projects, significantly advancing carbon neutrality goals worldwide.
