September 1: Chemical Price Hikes Take Effect Across the Board

ECHEMI 2026-09-01

On September 1, 2026, price increase notices previously issued by multiple chemical companies went into effect across the globe.

Nylon and Polyamide Chain

BASF raised prices for caprolactam, polyamide 6, and polyamide 6/66 copolymers in North America by $0.08 per pound (approximately $176 per metric ton). This is the third nylon price hike by BASF this year. The company said global conditions continue to cause volatility across the nylon value chain and further adjustments may follow. AdvanSix had previously announced a $0.12 per pound increase on similar products, effective August 3.

Coatings and Resins

Sherwin-Williams implemented an 8 percent price increase across its Paint Stores Group. Management said the hike was delayed until after the peak coating season to reduce impact on customers.

Allnex raised powder coating resin prices by approximately $74 per ton across indoor, standard weather-resistant, and super weather-resistant grades.

Wanhua Chemical raised acrylic acid prices by approximately $29 per ton to $1,209 per ton in Northeast, North, and East China. Butyl acrylate rose by approximately $59 per ton to $1,372 per ton across multiple regions.

Electronic Materials

Nan Ya Plastics raised copper clad laminate (CCL) and prepreg (PP) prices by 20 to 25 percent, effective September 1. The company cited sharp increases in upstream materials including copper foil, fiberglass fabric, and core resins, with glass fabric supply shortages being particularly acute. Nan Ya later clarified the adjustment would be implemented gradually through individual customer negotiations rather than a single across-the-board increase.

Basic Chemical Raw Materials

Wanhua Chemical raised domestic ex-factory prices across multiple regions. In Shandong, butadiene increased by approximately $27 per ton, MTBE by $7 per ton, and tert-butanol by $15 per ton. Styrene rose by approximately $29 per ton in North and East China. N-butanol increased by approximately $15 per ton across multiple regions. Several LDPE grades rose by $7 to $15 per ton in Shandong, East China, and South China.

BASF raised neopentyl glycol prices, with European NPG up approximately $290 per ton and North American NPG up $221 per ton. 1,6-hexanediol rose approximately $348 per ton in Europe.

The current wave of price hikes stems from tightening global energy and feedstock supplies. Since March 2026, Middle East tensions and Strait of Hormuz shipping disruptions have restricted about 20 percent of global crude trade and significant chemical volumes. Oil prices have risen sharply, with benzene, ethylene, and other feedstock supplies tightening and costs climbing, driving price increases across the chemical value chain.
