ATSP Composite Breakthrough Offers Aerospace Self-Healing and Shape Recovery Published in Top Journals
A new study led by Dr. Mohammad Naraghi of Texas A&M University, in collaboration with Dr. Andreas Polycarpou from the University of Tulsa, has revealed the remarkable capabilities of an advanced carbon fiber plastic known as aromatic thermosetting copolyester (ATSP). The research, featured in Macromolecules and Journal of Composite Materials, highlights ATSP’s exceptional mechanical strength, ability to recover shape, and self-healing properties.
Dr. Naraghi emphasized that ATSP’s unique characteristics make it ideal for demanding sectors such as aerospace, where components are exposed to extreme stress and temperature. If damage occurs, ATSP enables on-demand self-repair, potentially transforming maintenance and safety standards in aviation.
With further development and mass production, ATSP is expected to revolutionize the automotive industry as well, allowing vehicles to self-repair deformation after collisions, greatly enhancing safety and passenger protection.
