EFSA Deems Extended Use of Bacillolysin Enzyme Safe

ECHEMI 2025-08-31

EFSA’s experts have evaluated a food enzyme called bacillolysin produced by a non-GM strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (strain AGS 430) and found no safety concerns for its wider use . Previously, this enzyme was considered safe in 11 food manufacturing processes; the applicant sought to extend its use to one additional process . In an updated opinion issued on August 27, 2025, EFSA concluded that even with use in a total of 12 processes, the enzyme’s exposure levels (up to 7.111 mg/kg body weight per day in a worst-case scenario) pose no risk to consumers under the intended conditions . The evaluation also noted that in two processes the enzyme is removed from the final food, and in the remaining uses the dietary exposure is low . Overall, EFSA’s assessment supports the safe expansion of bacillolysin’s use in food production.
