EFSA Confirms Safety of Triacylglycerol Lipase for Expanded Food Uses

On 29 October 2025, the European Food Safety Authority issued an updated scientific opinion confirming that a triacylglycerol lipase produced by a non-GM Rhizopus arrhizus strain remains safe for use in five food manufacturing processes. The renewed assessment followed an application to extend its use, including in the production of 2-palmitic acid-enriched vegetable oils for infants aged up to three months, while withdrawing one previous application and revising another use level. EFSA estimated dietary exposure to be up to 0.33 mg TOS/kg body weight per day, and, when compared with the previously established NOAEL of 1960 mg TOS/kg body weight per day, concluded that the margin of exposure remains sufficiently high to rule out safety concerns under the intended conditions of use.
