EFSA Finds L-Cysteine Feed Additives Safe for All Animal Species

ECHEMI 2025-11-02

On 27 October 2025, the European Food Safety Authority published a scientific opinion on L-cysteine and L-cysteine hydrochloride used as flavouring feed additives for all animal species, confirming that the additives are safe for target animals, consumers and the environment when used under the proposed conditions. Supplementation in feed up to 25 mg/kg was considered safe for all species. The Panel noted no consumer or environmental risks. L-cysteine itself is not an irritant to skin or eyes and not a skin sensitiser, although L-cysteine hydrochloride forms are corrosive to the eyes and respiratory tract, meaning user exposure poses a risk and requires protective handling. As the substances are already used as flavouring compounds in food, no additional demonstration of efficacy was required for use in feed.
