Canada Proposes Revised Maximum Residue Limits for Pyrethrins and Penthiopyrad
Health Canada has released two consultation documents proposing revisions to maximum residue limits for the pesticides pyrethrins and penthiopyrad in several food commodities. These updates form part of the country’s ongoing regulatory review process aimed at ensuring residue limits reflect the most current scientific assessments and agricultural practices.
The proposed adjustments include updated limits for leafy Brassica vegetables, leafy greens, spices, hop cones, berry crops, cherries, broccoli, cucurbit vegetables, carrots and bulb onions in relation to pyrethrins, as well as a revised limit for bananas regarding penthiopyrad. Public comments have been invited for a consultation period extending from mid-November 2025 to late January 2026.
The initiative demonstrates Canada’s commitment to maintaining science-based residue regulations that support food safety, trade compliance and agricultural competitiveness. Stakeholders across farming, food processing and international trade sectors are expected to engage actively in the review.
