China National Salt Industry Corporation Advances 10,000 t/y Sodium Metal Expansion Project, Industry Leader Invests Nearly RMB 100 Million
On December 31, CNSIG announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, China Salt Inner Mongolia Chemical Sodium Industry Co., Ltd., plans to invest in the construction of an expansion project with an annual output of 10,000 tonnes of sodium metal, along with 15,500 tonnes of by-product liquid chlorine. The project aims to optimize existing production processes, improve operating efficiency, and further consolidate the company’s leading position in the sodium metal industry.
The project is currently in the preliminary preparation stage, with initial design work and related bidding procedures underway. The total investment is approximately RMB 84 million, of which about RMB 78 million is allocated to construction.
As a comprehensive listed enterprise engaged in salt production, salt chemicals, biopharmaceuticals, and mineral resource development, CNSIG has long focused on the salt and salt chemical industry. Leveraging abundant salt lake resources, the company has established significant advantages in scale and cost in the sodium metal segment. It is now one of the major sodium metal suppliers in China and globally, with strong overall competitiveness in terms of production capacity, costs, technology, and product quality.
With regard to sodium metal, the project will primarily target traditional and emerging application areas such as indigo dye, pharmaceutical intermediates, fast breeder reactor nuclear power, and sodium-ion battery energy storage. The products will serve the domestic mid- to high-end market while further expanding into overseas growth markets including India, Europe, the United States, and Russia, thereby reinforcing the company’s advantage of accounting for more than 30% of global sodium metal production capacity. As a by-product, liquid chlorine will be mainly consumed locally through the industrial park and surrounding chemical clusters, supplying regional chlorine-consuming enterprises and strengthening industrial chain synergies and closed-loop supply.
The project will adopt the company’s proven electrolytic production technology and make full use of existing utility facilities at the plant site, without the need for additional land. Raw material supply and energy support are well secured, and technological upgrades are expected to further reduce electricity and steam consumption, improving overall operational efficiency.
According to CNSIG, upon completion and commissioning, the project is expected to further lower unit production costs of sodium metal, enhance product value and profitability, and strengthen the company’s influence and pricing power within the industrial chain. Through the introduction of energy-saving equipment, automated production systems, and digital control technologies, the advanced level of the expanded facilities will be significantly improved. At the same time, the company plans to increase the variety of sodium metal products based on its existing diversified production capabilities, in order to better adapt to changes in market demand.
