France’s Vineyards Find a New Shield: Eden’s Mevalone Enters the Frontline of a Changing Fungicide Era

Eden Research has secured an expanded registration in France for its flagship biofungicide Mevalone, granting growers an additional weapon against two of the most destructive grapevine diseases, downy mildew and powdery mildew. The approval comes at a moment when France’s viticulture sector is under intensifying biological and regulatory pressure, and when demand for alternatives to traditional chemistry is rising at unprecedented speed.

France remains one of the world’s most heavily affected major grape-producing markets for downy mildew, with more than 780,000 hectares of vineyards continually exposed to recurring disease pressure. Recent seasons have been particularly punishing. Outbreaks across Bordeaux and other key regions during 2023 and 2024 triggered yield losses that reached one fifth of total production in some areas, and in extreme cases went even further. Climatic volatility has amplified disease intensity, while tightening regulatory scrutiny over copper-based products and conventional synthetic fungicides has narrowed the toolbox available to growers.

At the same time, the French viticulture market is undergoing a structural transformation driven by sustainability policies and consumer demand. Biological crop protection has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments in French plant protection, with market value projected to exceed US$200 million in 2025 and to maintain strong momentum toward 2030. Grapes represent a pivotal sub-market within this growth story, as vineyards face simultaneous pressure from downy mildew, powdery mildew and gray mold, all under an increasingly restrictive regulatory climate.

Organic grape production has become a defining force in shaping this shift. Roughly one fifth of French vineyards are now managed organically, far exceeding the national agricultural average. This expansion has heightened demand for certified biological solutions, positioning Mevalone as a timely entrant. The product’s organic certification aligns directly with grower requirements for disease control strategies that comply with evolving environmental standards.

Eden Research has indicated that, although regulatory and commercial conditions continue to evolve, the expanded French registration carries an estimated annual peak revenue potential of approximately €8 million. Beyond its immediate commercial impact, the approval highlights a broader industry transition: plant protection in viticulture is increasingly being redefined not merely by efficacy, but by regulatory compatibility, sustainability credentials and long-term resilience.
