On August 3, Sinopec Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd. started up its 50,000-tonne-per-year specialty polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) resin unit, which achieved stable operation during its initial startup and produced products that met quality specifications, with the first shipment already sent to Europe. With the new line, the company's total PVA production capacity has increased to 210,000 tonnes per year, making it the world's largest single-site high-end PVA production base, ranking fourth globally in total capacity.
High-end PVA long dependent on imports, new unit fills domestic gap
PVA is a biodegradable water-soluble polymer material with applications spanning textiles, construction, photovoltaics, electronics, pharmaceuticals and other high-value-added sectors. In consumer products, it can be used as a moisturizing ingredient in facial masks and eye drops, and as water-soluble film for laundry pods. High-end grades enhance the toughness of safety glass for automobiles and high-speed trains, and their high purity and transparency make them suitable for optical films, polarizers and other new energy and high-end electronics applications.
China has long relied on imports for optical film-grade and pharmaceutical-grade high-end PVA. SVW Chemical offers more than 100 PVA grades. The new unit uses advanced alcoholysis and precision purification technologies to produce high-end PVA that meets international standards, filling the domestic gap in high-end raw materials.
Technical highlights: 40% efficiency gain, 17-month construction
The project team overcame multiple technical challenges including precise temperature control and consistent product quality. A new polymerization process increased production capacity by 40% compared with earlier-generation equipment. The facility also incorporates four exhaust gas and wastewater recovery units, along with an automated packaging system.
Construction was completed in 17 months, recording 1.98 million safe working hours. The unit was mechanically completed on May 22 and entered the commissioning phase on May 23, achieving a smooth startup on August 3.

SVW Chemical has more than 40 years of experience in PVA research, development and manufacturing. Its portfolio has grown from one PVA grade at the beginning of operations to more than 100 today. More than 70 products are exported to over 40 countries. More than 80% of the PVA exported to Europe's high-end market comes from this facility, and it is the only Chinese PVA manufacturer to have entered the U.S. market.
Beyond its core PVA business, SVW Chemical has invested 14 years in independently developing high-barrier synthetic resins, breaking foreign technological monopolies. These products, known for their excellent oxygen barrier properties, are widely used in food packaging, automotive fuel tanks and oxygen-barrier underfloor heating pipes.
Moving forward, SVW Chemical will leverage its expanded capacity and R&D capabilities to continue developing high-value-added specialty materials and strengthen its position as a segment champion.
