Students Can Now Learn How to Make Safe Cosmetics
Now, it is hoping to arm science graduates with the training to formulate cosmetics.
The university is offering a one-year advanced diploma in cosmetics from next month.
"There is no graduate qualification on cosmetic formulation and skin health in South Africa," said Nonhlanhla Khumalo, head of dermatology. ''We have developed a curriculum to close this gap."
Five bursaries have been made available.
Khumalo's work has shaped the industry. Her research found that many Brazilian keratin-type products had dangerous levels of formalde-hyde and warned fans of the "chiskop" haircut to bring their own clippers to the barber to avoid skin ailments. She has also studied the dangers of skin lightening.
