SABIC Is The First to Introduce The Certified Renewable Polymer Based on Haihai Plastics

ECHEMI 2021-12-03

Recently, SABIC, a world-renowned diversified chemical company, and HHI, a plastic recycling company based in Malaysia, jointly announced a groundbreaking cooperation. It plans to use advanced recycling technology to recycle mixed sea-trending plastics, and then produce the world’s first sea-trending plastic. Plastic is a raw material and a certified renewable polymer. In the next few months, based on SABIC TRUCIRCLETM product portfolio recycling solutions, SABIC customers will successively launch a series of brand new consumer products made with this renewable polymer.

Recycling sea-trending plastics not only helps protect the ocean and waterway environment, but also promotes the reuse of recycled plastics in related industries, thereby creating value for local communities. In this cooperation, HHI's local partners in Malaysia first recovered relevant materials from the seawater channels and land areas within a radius of 50 kilometers of the coastline, and then transported them to HHI, where they were converted into a series of advanced recycling technologies. Pyrolysis oil. After that, SABIC will use the pyrolysis oil in its production process to replace traditional fossil raw materials to produce a brand-new renewable polymer, and the renewable polymer has passed the Zero Plastic Oceans certification. Through the cooperation between the two parties, HHI has therefore become the first company to obtain the certification to recycle Haihai plastics.

HHI has created a set of trend-sea plastic recycling model to realize the transformation of circular economy, including five major steps: first, collect trend-sea plastics with a wide network of partners; second, transform it into high-quality raw materials suitable for subsequent production and processing ; Third, to collaborate with partners to develop new products; fourth, to provide customers with a platform to support their use of more sustainable materials; fifth, to cultivate a new generation of responsible consumers who favor sustainable materials.

SABIC General Manager of Engineering Thermoplastics and Market Solutions Abdullah Al-Otaibi said: “SABIC knows that preventing plastics from turning into trash is a global challenge we are facing. The development of a fully recyclable recycling system has a long way to go, but it is indispensable. It not only requires us to act together, but also requires the close collaboration of all participants in the value chain. This is our commitment to developing long-term renewable solutions. The original intention of moving side by side with more new partners like HHI. Including products made from TrendHai plastics, we hope to greatly increase the output of renewable materials, which will benefit our customers while benefiting society and society. environment."

Kian Seah, CEO of HHI, pointed out: “In HHI’s journey to protect the ocean and communities, from the company’s business planning, to collaboration with partners such as SABIC, to the promotion of relevant ecological initiatives, the circular economy model is everything to us. Work hard to show the direction. We believe that we have the ability to create a cleaner future that treats waste plastics as a valuable resource in the value chain. These achievements that we have achieved together with SABIC make us very proud. But we also realize that, At present, we are still in its infancy, and the realization of circular economy will never be achieved overnight. The spirit and enthusiasm shared by both of us helps us overcome all difficulties, not only achieving the implementation of the innovation process, but also ensuring the reliability of the technology and the quality of the end product. Stability, and the feasibility of a recycling consumption model. Based on our shared commitment to the production and recycling of recycled plastics, we look forward to working with SABIC to respond to environmental and social challenges in a consistent and meaningful way in the future."

This trend-sea plastic-based certified renewable polymer is an important part of the TRUCIRCLETM product portfolio of SABIC's recycling solution. The SABIC TRUCIRCLETM product portfolio was officially launched in 2019. The main areas covered include: physical recycling products, certified renewable products made from mixed plastic waste (recycling based on advanced technology), certified bio-based renewable products, Recyclable design and closed-loop recycling service.
