Comprehensive material upgrade! SABIC launches LNP ELCRES CXL polycarbonate copolymer resin

ECHEMI 2024-12-24

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), a global leader in the chemical industry, has launched new LNP ELCRES CXL polycarbonate (PC) copolymer resins with excellent chemical resistance. These specialty materials are ideal for helping customers in the automotive, electronics, industrial and infrastructure markets cope with increasing exposure to harsh chemicals that can cause environmental stress cracking and premature failure. In addition to providing higher chemical resistance than existing materials, LNP ELCRES CXL copolymer resins can also improve the durability and reliability of parts through excellent low-temperature impact resistance and weathering resistance.

“As consumers frequently disinfect surfaces such as smartphone displays and electric vehicle chargers, the growing popularity of wearable devices and continued smartphone use puts electronics in constant contact with skin oils, lotions and other personal care products. Our new LNP ELCRES CXL materials help maintain part performance and aesthetics, even with frequent exposure to aggressive chemicals,” said Maureen MacDonald-Stein, director, strategy and marketing, SABIC’s polymers, specialties portfolio.

The new LNP ELCRES CXL copolymer resins offer outstanding chemical resistance, outperforming traditional amorphous materials such as polycarbonate resins and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene blends. SABIC’s internal testing has shown that LNP ELCRES CXL copolymer resins have strong resistance to a wide range of chemicals found in the mobility, industrial, infrastructure and electronics industries, including gasoline, antifreeze, caustic soda (5% solution) and many related chemicals.

SABIC’s new CXL portfolio includes opaque and transparent non-flame retardant (FR) grades, opaque thin-wall non-FR grades and glass-reinforced options. These materials also offer value-added properties such as non-brominated/non-chlorinated non-flame retardant for thin gauges, low temperature ductility (down to -60°C), high flow for easy processing and good colorability for aesthetic requirements. They can meet UL 746°C UV and water immersion requirements (f1 rating) for outdoor use.

“Our LNP ELCRES CXL copolymer resins can help manufacturers and brands address the risk of performance and appearance degradation caused by the increasing use of chemicals,” said Scott Fisher, general manager, technology, SABIC Polymers, Specialties. “Our proprietary copolymer technology addresses the need to protect products from damage or loss of value. By helping to extend the life of components, LNP ELCRES CXL materials contribute to sustainability, brand reputation and customer satisfaction.”
