What Colour Is Glucose and Factors Affecting It?
What colour is glucose can be debated. Some may say that it is blue while others may say it's clear. It all depends on the type of glucose you are talking about. Glucose is a simple sugar that the body breaks down to use energy. Factors affecting the colour of glucose;
1.Additives added to the glucose solution
This may affect how glucose is seen by your eye. You may find some drinks in the supermarket that actually change the colour of glucose so it less obvious than others.
2.Carbonation:
Certain carbonates such as bicarbonate and sodium carbonate are used to improve the taste of the glucose solution, however this effects the colour of glucose since they turn it a reddish brown.
3.Antioxidants:
There are many natural antioxidants that our body produces, however some people take supplements where there are extra amounts and this effects how our body breaks down glucose. A type of glucose called dextrose is produced instead when this occurs. This can result in a browner glucose. This explain what colour is glucose.
4.Hydrogen
The hydrogen molecule is responsible for creating a blue colour in water and this may occur with glucose solutions as well. This means that the colour of the solution is not directly related to how much of the sugar there is but how it reacts with other molecules present.
5.The presence or absence of oxygen
When glucose is present in a pure form it happens to be colourless. However the presence of oxygen makes the glucose to change colour. The more oxygen there is, the lighter the colour of the solution becomes.
6.Dehydration:
When water is removed from glucose, this can cause some changes in the color of glucose. The solution coloured more and takes on a brown colour until it boils off as steam due to dehydration.
7.Polymerization:
In a glucose solution that has been left over time, polymerisation occurs which means molecules of glucose link up to form a structure. This can effect the colour and transparency of glucose.
8.Intrinsic Opacity:
This another factor that determine what colour is glucose. The molecular structure of glucose is not transparent as it is to human eyes, so some of the colour comes from this fact and its translucence. Some theorists argue that this is an important factor in determining the colour. Brightness: As in bright light, the brightness reduces in white light due to scattering of the beam or spectrum by particles or molecules in the gas medium, especially if these are small enough to scatter only in one dimension (e.g., highly polarised light).
What are benefits of glucose?
1.When glucose is broken down, energy is produced and this is what the body uses as fuel.
2.Glucose molecules in a solution are able to absorb certain colours making them affect the colour of glucose. This may be a problematic factor since it can cause an 'artificial' colour change which makes it seem more appealing.
3.If you prevent glucose from reaching too high levels in the blood stream [hyperglycemia] it will lead to a condition called insulin shock which can cause death if left untreated for too long. The opposite of this [hypoglycemia] is when the blood stream doesn't contain enough glucose to provide energy which may result in fatigue or lack of energy.
4.When glucose is injected into the body, it provides energy and this is why you can feel energized after injecting it but only for a short period of time
What are risks of glucose?
1.Glucose isn't that good for our bodies since it can cause damage or death to cells in the body if consumed in large quantities or at elevated levels.
2.The risk of diabetes is a metabolic disorder that happens when glucose levels in the blood become too high or too low. This can lead to mild symptoms but the long-term effects can cause serious illness or death.
3.Some people have a deficiency in glucose and this can lead to a coma or death. If you suspect this condition in yourself, you should see an expert.
4.Too much glucose can cause hyperglycemia.
5.If you take too much glucose, it will cause a very high blood sugar level which can lead to coma or even death if left untreated for too long.
6.Because of its high solubility in water, glucose can dissolve into the body and cause damage to cells [edema formation] . Even though this may be negligible, it is still a risk so you should avoid taking large quantities of glucose for prolonged periods [injections] . It is important to keep your insulin dosage at a moderate level if you are on a medical regimen that requires insulin because of this reason.
