Detergents are also composed of these acids. Thanks to the fatty acids in them, detergents help make your clothes cleaner and fresher. Shampoos also have an amount of acid in them, which are used to fortify your hair and cleanse them of dirt.
Sometimes, the hydrogen atoms in these groups are replaced. The modified acid becomes soluble in water, while the long carbons also dissolve in oil and grease.
For other cleaning agents, molecules of fatty acids are combined with glycerin. The result is a reaction called saponification, which is responsible for the cleansing effect. The reaction creates soap molecules where one end is water-soluble, and the other is fat-soluble.
