Northvolt builds battery gigafactory in North Germany
Recently, the Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt announced that the company will build a 60-gigawatt battery plant "Northvolt Drei" in the city of Heide in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The plant will be the company's third battery factory and its first production facility outside Sweden. The project cost about 4 billion euros.
Peter Carlsson, CEO of Northvolt, said that Schleswig-Holstein’s strategic location, abundant supply of renewable energy, and high-quality talent will help the company produce highly environmentally friendly car batteries. The decision was also influenced by the city's proximity to the metropolis of Hamburg. The site selection of the factory also received help from Germany Trade & Invest.
Germany is Europe's leading producer of electric vehicle batteries, with 485 GWh of existing and planned facilities, according to Handelsblatt. Other companies that have recently built or planned production facilities in Germany include CATL, Honeycomb Energy Technology, PSA Group and Tesla.
