Mitsubishi's Bio-Based Plastic Durabio™ Used In The Production Of Ballpoint Pens

ECHEMI 2022-03-22

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) recently announced that its bio-based engineering plastic "DURABIO™" has been selected by Pilot Corporation for the production of the "Acroball T" series and the "FRIXION Ball Knock 05" series of ballpoint pens.

FRIXION Ball Knock 05" series of ballpoint pens. These products will be offered for sale by Pilot as of February 3, 2022.

DURABIO™ is a bio-based engineering plastic made from the renewable plant-derived raw material "isosorbide", which is a highly durable material.

In addition, the plastic can be used in a wide range of design components due to its excellent colour development during the colouring process and mouldability during processing. These excellent properties are highly rated, which has led to its adoption. This is the first example of the use of DURABIO™ in stationery applications

The use of biomass plastics made from plant-derived materials such as DURABIO™ reduces oil consumption, which is an exhaustible resource. As the plants that make up the raw material absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, it also helps to reduce greenhouse gases that are thought to contribute to global warming.

mCC will continue to focus on the development of DURABIO™, working tirelessly towards achieving carbon neutrality.
