Liquefaction of gases refers to just that-putting gases into a liquid state. The simplest method for liquefying gases involves cooling them until they reach their critical temperature, but there are alternatives that don't require you to cool them so much. When Claude developed his method, he reasoned that if helium had a critical temperature above room temperature and could create bubbles when warmed up through another fluid, then his new process should work for any gas whose critical point was above room temperature. In practice, Claude's method doesn't involve multiple fluids or temperatures because it takes advantage of what's called supercritical fluid behavior. A supercritical fluid is any substance at its boiling point or melting point at high pressures (over around 800 bars).
That means a gas under these conditions behaves like a liquid. In order to liquefy gases by Claude's method, you must first dissolve them in a solvent. If you don't use enough solvent, you won't be able to push down far enough on your gas to get it into its supercritical state-it'll just stay as a normal gas. To make sure you have enough solvent, follow these steps: First measure out your desired amount of solvent and add water until you have twice as much volume as your desired amount of final solution. Next, mix in your dissolved gases with stirring until all solids are dissolved; continue stirring for about five minutes after that.
Other Methods to Liquefy Gases
Liquefaction of gases by Claude's method is just one of many methods used to liquefy gases. Other methods include Graham's law, which uses a mixture of air and ammonia, or Joule-Thomson cooling, which exploits temperature changes to achieve gas liquefaction. Methods like these are often used in industrial settings as part of distillation processes for creating fuel gases for rocket propulsion systems.
In these instances, Claude's method is less than ideal because it doesn't use a catalyst like other methods do. However, given Claude's method can operate under pressure at temperatures that might otherwise be impossible without freezing your gas into a solid (you know what we mean here), it remains valuable for certain applications where other liquification techniques aren't applicable or feasible.

Claude's method is a process for separating gases that are mixed together. Invented by Frenchman Claude Pouillet in 1834, it has become an indispensable technique for modern industry. The process can be used on a variety of compounds, including those that are normally gases at room temperature (such as natural gas) or volatile liquids (such as gasoline).
This can make production more efficient in many cases, particularly if valuable compounds need to be separated from water or other contaminants.
