The sales volume of hairy crabs in Taihu Lake of Jiangsu Province decreased

In China, the best time to eat crabs in a year is coming. However, crab farmers along Taihu Lake in Jiangsu Province are a little more worried about this harvest season than in previous years. Taihu Lake, located in the fishing and rice town of the south of the Yangtze River in China, has been famous for its rich and delicious aquatic products since ancient times. The "three white lakes" and Taihu hairy crabs are more famous at home and abroad. Since 1984, purse-seine aquaculture has been practiced in Taihu Lake waters, which has greatly increased aquatic production and contributed greatly to the local economic development along the lake and the increase of fishermen's income and wealth. However, according to the supervision requirements of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment for the water environment control of Taihu Lake, by the end of June this year, Suzhou had completed the task of dismantling the enclosure of Taihu Lake. The surface of Taihu Lake, once covered with a "net of heaven and earth", has been restored to a scene like a mirror and boundless view decades ago. However, the production of Taihu hairy crab has suffered a great blow due to the dismantling of the purse seine. According to Jiangsu Taihu Fisheries Administration, the output of wild crabs naturally growing in Taihu Lake this year is only 100 tons, less than a fraction of the total output of 2800 tons last year. In addition to the decline in production, the sales of Taihu hairy crabs this year are not ideal. Qin Xuerong, president of Taihu Hairy Crab Association in Wuzhong District, said: "Sales during National Day this year are not good, down nearly 30% from last year." Wuzhong District has the largest water area of Taihu Lake in the administrative areas along the lake, and is the main production area of Taihu Lake aquatic products. After the removal of purse seine, crab farmers began to switch to standardized ecological pond culture. Qin Xuerong estimated that the production of hairy crabs in ponds in the whole region this year was about 1000 tons. Next year, more than 10,000 mu of ponds will be standardized and put into use. With the adaptation of crab farmers to pond farming, the output of hairy crabs is expected to rise further.

In Qidu Town, Wujiang District, Xi Xinggen, president of Taihu Crab Association, said that hairy crabs were better in size and quality than last year because of the good weather conditions this year, but their sales were 30% lower than last year because "many people would not buy them once they heard that they were pond crabs".

said Hsieh Hinggen: "Now everyone is a little anxious, but not pessimistic. Now many places are using ecological pond farming, sales are not bad. Why can't we do what they can? The most important thing is the quality of hairy crabs, not whether they are raised in lakes or ponds.

"At present, the standard of ecological pond culture is very high. The water is Taihu Lake. The prohibited drugs can not be used and the water quality should be discharged up to the standard. Rebuild the brand of Taihu Crab with high standards and strict requirements. This year is only the first year. It's normal for sales to decline a little. There are still many things we need to do. Xixingen said crab farmers were not discouraged by temporary setbacks. Soon it will be the best time to eat crabs in a year. Crab farmers are rubbing their hands and looking forward to a good market for crabs.
