Nature of sodium carbonate is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and produces alkaline solution. It has a slightly salty taste and it is often used as a water softener. Sodium carbonate is also known as washing soda or soda ash. It is produced from the mineral trona. Because it can be produced from a renewable source such as trona, it is considered to be a green chemistry. The process that produces sodium carbonate is the Solvay process, which involves heating the mined trona at high temperature in excess of 500 degrees celsius in an iron vessel called the "calciner" to release ammonia gas (according to chemguide.co.
Uses of sodium carbonate
1.Water softener:
Sodium carbonate works as a water softener to remove the magnesium and calcium ions from water. The reaction that takes place is shown below:
Na2CO3 + Mg2+ + 2HCO3- ⇋ Mg(HCO3)2 + 2Na+ + CO2 ⇋Mg(CO3)2 + H2O
In acidic conditions, where the concentration of hydrogen ions is high, carbonate gets dissociated into bicarbonate and hydrogen ion. Bicarbonate ion gets reduced to form carbon dioxide gas leaving sodium ions behind in the solution. To neutralize the hydrogen ions, sodium hydroxide is added. This reaction is often used in water purification.
2. Manufacturing of glass:
Sodium carbonate is also used to make glass and ceramics. Sodium carbonate acts as a flux to lower the melting point of silica sand and separates the impurities during glass manufacturing process. The reaction that takes place is shown below:

3.Making dyes:
Sodium carbonate is a necessary ingredient in making dyestuffing mordant, which is a substance used to dye the cotton or woolen fabric. It mainly reacts with several metal ions such as calcium, sodium, iron, and manganese or other non metal-containing substances to produce "basic dyestuffs". The bleaching reaction is shown below:
4. Producing sodium hypochlorite:
Sodium carbonate is also used in the production of sodium hypochlorite. It acts as a free radical agent to bleach the bacteria from hard water. Sodium hypochlorite reacts with chloride ions in hard water to produce chlorine gas which kills the bacteria. The reaction that takes place is shown below:
5.Skimming for oil and natural gas deposits:
Sodium carbonate can also be used to skim oil and natural gas deposits during drilling operations. It removes the dissolved oil, making drilling easier.
6.Residue removal from paper manufacturing:
The sodium carbonate is used to remove the color from paper. Sodium carbonate reacts with chlorine ions present in the pulp to produce hypochlorous acid, a weak acid. The reaction that takes place is shown below:
7.Acting as a food additive:
Sodium carbonate is used as a food additive because it provides pleasant taste and similar behavior as citric acid, which helps improve the quality of food products and retain vitamins and minerals. 8. Toothpaste:
Sodium carbonate serves as a main ingredient in toothpaste to keep the teeth clean.
9. Steam treatment:

10. Disinfectant:
Sodium carbonate is used to disinfect the water because of its ability to produce hypochlorous acid, which is a weak acid that can kill the microorganisms. The reaction that takes place is shown below:

11. Dyeing yarn:
Sodium carbonate acts as a "fixer" in the dyeing process when it reacts with certain dyes to produce reactive ions. It also removes excess color materials and keeps the yarns white and clean.
12. Paper making industry:
Sodium carbonate is used in the paper making industry to adjust the pH of recycled paper. Its less acidic properties allow it to bind up the metals and remove them from the solution.
