Baltic dry bulk index fell 3.3% on January 20
On January 20, the Baltic Exchange dry bulk index fell to its lowest level since April, driven by the fall in the Capesize and Panamax indexes. According to Reuters, the Baltic dry bulk index fell 3.3% (25 points) to 729 on the same day. The Capesize Index fell 16.7% (119 points) to 593, its lowest level since April 23. The index has fallen for the 27th consecutive session and the biggest daily decline since early April. Daily hire for Capesize vessels decreased by $592 to $7760. This type of ship usually carries 170000-180000 tons of iron ore, coal and other goods. Imports of iron ore at Chinese ports fell for a third consecutive week, falling to 127 million tons on January 17, the lowest level since the last week of September 2019, according to data. On the same day, Panamax fell 0.5% (4 points) to 866. Panamax's daily charter was down $39 to $7791. This type of ship usually carries 60000-70000 tons of coal and grain. The freight rate index of super handy ship is maintained at 560.
