How to make diethyl_ether and its physical properties
How to make diethyl ether is an old process, demonstrating the synthesis of ethyl ether using anhydrous hydric alcohol and ether as a solvent. The original method was invented during 1820s to 1860s by British chemists William Thomas Brande and Friedrich Kekule. Diethyl Ether, more commonly known as DME, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H10O2. Its molecule consists of two ethyl groups connected by a single oxygen atom, giving it four hydrogen atoms attached to each carbon atom. This makes diethyl ether one of the simplest ethers from which polyether compounds are made. In addition, it is a colorless liquid that boils at 25℃ and is miscible with water.
Physical properties of diethyl ether
1. It has a colorless to pale yellow liquid
This liquid has a colorless to pale yellow liquid, which is a nonpolar liquid with a low boiling point. It has no odor and is miscible with water. It is also soluble in many organic solvents, such as methyl alcohol and ethanol, but not ethyl acetate or ether.
2. Its odorless nature
Due to its low boiling point, diethyl ether does not have the typical odor of normal volatile hydrocarbons. At room temperature, the decoloration of diethyl ether is negligible within about 12 hours after it was added to boiling water and mixed thoroughly.
3. Its vapor pressure
Vapor pressure of this liquid is low and it is not an explosive. Its vapor pressure at normal temperature and ordinary atmospheric pressures is between 0.05 - 0.2 mmHg, which means that the diethyl ether fumes will quickly disappear into the air, so it can not be used as a volatile hydrocarbon solvent. However, its boiling point is lower than that of most other ethers (lower than 25℃). It has good drying properties and has a higher boiling point compared to ethyl alcohol or propyl alcohol (40℃ and 78℃ respectively).
4. It does not burn easily.
This liquid is not flammable, and it will only burn at very high temperatures. It can be used to manufacture synthetic rubber and plastics. Therefore, it is often used in the manufacture of other hydrocarbon solvents. This explains how to make diethyl ether.
5. Its miscibility with water
This liquid does not have a high boiling point, it is relatively stable at room temperature. With water, this liquid is relatively miscible and is volatile one-fourth of its volume with the water added to the diethyl ether at a temperature of 117℃ for one hour under an atmosphere of 99% relative humidity (the amount of diethyl ether evaporated from the solution was 0.1 mL).
6. Drying properties
Diethyl ether is also known as a drying agent. When diethyl ether is used, a lot of alcohols and hydrocarbons are removed easily. It can be used to remove some of the acidic compounds such as acetic and formic acid, and ketones such as methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). This mixture can be added directly to the solution containing the target compound from step 2. Diethyl ether has good drying properties and enough to dry out the solution completely within 24 hours after adding it at a concentration of 250g/L in water for 12 hours.
Uses of diethyl ether
1. As a solvent
Diethyl ether is often used as a solvent for the production of ethyl cellulose, plastics and rubber, synthetic resins and paints. It is also used to extract oils from plants.
2. As an anesthetic in surgery
Diethyl ether was adopted as the first anesthetic in American surgery during 1846. However, today it has been replaced by safer drugs that are less toxic to the organism. Yet, it is still popular as an industrial solvent and organic intermediates for organic chemical syntheses and other organic reactions. Additionally, it is used to remove water from certain kinds of rocks and concentrates them in gold mines.
3. Production of anesthetics
Diethyl ether is used to make diethyl ether, which is also known as ethyl iodide and ethyl iodo-iodide. The organic compound diethyl ether is used for the synthesis of many more pharmaceutical products in the pharmaceutical industry.
4. Production of other chemicals
Diethyl Ether is also used to manufacture some chemicals in the carbon fiber industry, such as ethylan and methyl ethyl ketone, which are essential ingredients for manufacturing carbon fiber composite materials. In addition, some drugs such as valium have been made from it
In conclusions, how to make diethyl ether is an old process, highlighting the synthesis of ethyl ether using anhydrous hydric alcohol and ether as a solvent.
