What are the benefits of benzoic acid in skin care

ECHEMI 2022-09-08

Benzoic acid in skin care is commonly used as a preservative in cosmetics and filling agent in ointments. As the main ingredient of benzoyl peroxide, which is most commonly used for acne and acne-causing bacteria. It is also found in many other skin care products due to its ability to prevent blemishes from forming.

However, there are some side effects that come with using benzoic acid as a preservative including an allergic reaction that may cause a skin rash or itching; contact dermatitis; or photosensitivity reactions that can lead to adverse effects such as skin irritation, burning, redness, and swelling.

Benefits of benzoic acid in skin care

1. Acne treatment

The use of benzoic acid in skin care can effectively reduce the number of acne-causing bacteria. It is also formulated with a natural ingredient such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid to treat acne and prevent future outbreaks.

2. Sunburn treatment

Benzoic acid protects skin from the burning effects caused by the sun's harmful UV rays. It is also used to prevent peeling that may occur during exposure to sunlight and for preventing delayed tanning effect, which means that it does not change the color of your skin after exposure to sunlight.

3. Blemish prevention

As stated earlier, one of the most popular uses of benzoic acid is as a preservative in cosmetics and skin care products with the main purpose of preventing blemishes from forming. It is also formulated with other natural ingredients to help prevent blemishes from forming like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or cinnamic acid.

4. Bacteria fighting properties

Benzoic acid has natural antibacterial properties that can effectively stop the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It works by stopping the bacterial enzymes that produce the cell wall from doing their job so that bacteria can no longer reproduce.

5. Tissue regeneration

Benzoic acid is well known for its ability to regenerate damaged skin tissues. It functions by increasing the amount of collagen production in your skin so that damaged tissues grow back stronger. It is also able to accelerate cell renewal and skin regeneration, which means that it will speed up the recovery of your skin after undergoing surgery, injury or cancer treatment.

6. Treating and preventing hyper-pigmentation

Benzoic acid has a bleaching effect on the skin and can therefore be used to treat the non-cancerous blemishes on your face such as pigmentation spots caused by excessive sun exposure or acne scars. It resurfaces the damaged area to lighten the discoloration caused by acne so that it will no longer give rise to new breakouts.

Side effects

1. Allergic reactions

Benzoic acid is an ingredient that mainly gets the bad reviews for causing allergic reactions and contact dermatitis. The reactions will typically appear within the first few weeks of using the product and become progressively severe. Symptoms include skin irritation, burning, itching, redness, or swelling. Contact dermatitis may be accompanied by a lump on your skin or even blistering that can develop into an ulcer if you did not take measures to treat it at its onset. The reaction itself will subside after a few days but could lead to more serious complications such as scarring if left untreated early enough.

2. Photosensitivity

Whenever you use a product that contains benzoic acid, you should make it a point to apply sunscreen whenever you are exposed to sunlight. It is important that you do this because benzoic acid can cause photosensitivity reaction. This means that the ingredient can react with UV rays causing your skin to become extra sensitive than normal. Just one exposure to UV rays can already lead to adverse effects like severe skin irritation, burning, redness and swelling of your skin or even blistering or ulceration. It may take up to 48 hours before the signs appear so make sure that you stay indoors after application of products containing benzoic acid and wear protective clothing like caps and shoes when going outside during daylight hours.

3. Skin irritation and rash

Benzoic acid can cause allergic reactions including skin rashes, abrasions, hives, or even anaphylactic shock. If a product contains a high concentration of the ingredient you may even experience symptoms such as low blood pressure and convulsions. Most common side effects are either skin irritation or a mild rash on your lips and mouth but could also manifest on other parts of the body like the back of your hands, neck, chest or inner thighs.

4. Cell damage

Benzoic acid has been linked to adrenal fatigue which is said to be caused by using products that contain it excessively for an extended period of time. The adrenal glands are responsible for producing hormones that help your body respond to stressful situations by either speeding up or slowing down the rate at which your body does its functions. The symptoms of adrenal fatigue are low blood pressure, dizziness, loss of appetite, joint pain, insomnia and frequent urination at night.

In conclusions, benzoic acid in skin care can be a very effective preservative and is mostly used for preventing liquid products from going rancid. It can also be used to treat blemishes, prevent skin damage from sun exposure, and speed up wound healing. However, not all benzoic acid products are safe for most people and should be carefully evaluated before you make your purchase.
