How is NaCl an organic molecule and its properties
Is NaCl an organic molecule is question that is often asked by students. NaCl is a chemical compound that is used in the production of nitriles and related products. This compound was developed in 1894 by German chemist Otto Wallach who inadvertently discovered it during the commercial production of acrylonitrile, n-butanal, n-butylamine, and nylon 6. The name "NaCl" comes from the initials for the German country where Wallach's discovery occurred, which was denoted as "Deutschland.
Physical properties of NaCl
1.White solid
NaCl has a white powder appearance. It appears in a wide range of water and is, therefore, classified as hygroscopic. It is hydrophilic which means it can dissolve in water forming a clear solution. NaCl usually appears in a variety of crystalline forms, but in molten form instead of this crystalline form it becomes a liquid that eventually becomes thick and viscous to the touch when cooled at room temperature. This may explain the question, is NaCl an organic molecule.
2. Boiling point
NaCl has a boiling point at 3500 Degrees Celsius which is fairly low compared to other chemical compounds that have melting points at extremely cold conditions (between -210 and -298 deg C). The melting point at room temperatures is rated to be between 544 and 557 degrees Celsius.
3. Odour
NaCl has no absolute odor. It has a particular smell at room temperature which is less noticeable than the smell of other chemical compounds. In pure form, NaCl is said to have an odour that is described as sour-sweet. Commercial variety of NaCl are usually perfumed using either vanilla or arose fragrance in order to enhance the smell when used for commercial purposes, however this perfume wearing variety is not as effective in terms of odour and will, therefore, smell stronger than its pure form.
4. Metallic
NaCl is a metallic element. It is said to have an oxidation potential that is high. This means it slowly reacts with air at room temperature and when exposed to sunlight this reaction is accelerated, causing the oxidation of NaCl in air. The presence of NaCl in suspension in water has been shown to cause precipitation of crystalline forms of NaCl which are rich in nitrogen and hydrogen containing organic compounds.
5. pH
The pH level for NaCl ranges from 2 to 5. The higher the pH value, the greater the hydration percentage and hydrogen concentration of NaCl is, but with lower capacity for solubility compared to other salt-type chemical compounds with a lower pH value.
6. Density
The density of NaCl is measured at the temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and the mass being 1.093 g/cm3, which is slightly higher than that of water (1 g/cm3), as well as slightly lower compared to sugar syrup, which is 1.056 g/cm3 at room temperature. As a result, NaCl is lighter than other chemical compounds with a similar boiling point value and density value such as ethanol and ethyl acetate.
7. Melting
NaCl has a melting point at between 544 and 557 degrees Celsius. NaCl is an element which is soluble in water and it can be melted by adding it to water in a small amount or even by heating the water that contains NaCl. Solidifying from the waxy form of crystalline NaCl to the liquid form of NaCl is not very difficult for most people. NaCl melts at about 4 degrees Celsius above its boiling point, meaning that it can be easily melted with a slightly higher temperature setting on an electric stove or simply through heat exhaustion.
8. Chemical formula
NaCl involves the following chemical formula: NaCl, which stands for Sodium Chloride with two atoms each of sodium and chloride content in each molecule. It is an alkaline compound that is found in various formulas as NaCl. It is also known as common salt or salt of table and it has the approximate chemical formula of NaCl.
Uses of NaCl
1. Industrial use
NaCl is an important industrial chemical that is used in the production of many different products. The primary use of NaCl is in the manufacturing of nitriles, which is a type of chemical compound intended for use in lyes industry, specifically for the dyes industry. This compound can be used to synthesise many different types of chemicals that are required for the production of plastics and dyes to name a few.
2. Medical purposes
NaCl has been identified as having importance in medical purposes by being used as a medication agent during some surgeries and procedures. Common usage of the substance is in the production of nitroglycerin with some pharmaceutical companies, however this action is not very common and there are alternatives that are more common.
In conclusions, is NaCl an organic molecule, in my opinion, yes, (considering the fact it is an alkali) because it also has a nitrate group. Organic compounds can be considered according to the number of carbon atoms and their shape in three structural types: aliphatic (linear), aromatic(also called cyclic or ring), and other.
