Hyperthyroidism in children
Hyperthyroidism refers to a clinical syndrome caused by excessive secretion of thyroid hormones, often accompanied by symptoms such as goiter, bulging eyes and increased basal metabolic rate. Childhood hyperthyroidism is mainly seen in diffuse toxic goiter (Graves' disease). Pediatric hyperthyroidism accounts for about 5% of all hyperthyroidism, and is more common in school-age children. About 2% of fetuses born to pregnant women with Graves' disease will show symptoms of hyperthyroidism after birth.
