Potassium iodide tablets

Function and Efficacy

This product is an iodine supplement. Potassium iodide can have two effects on thyroid function depending on the dose. 1. When preventing and treating endemic (simple) goiter, a small dose of iodine preparation is given as a raw material for iodine synthesis to correct the excessive secretion of pituitary thyrotropin, thereby shrinking the enlarged thyroid gland. 2. Large doses of iodine preparations are used as antithyroid drugs to temporarily control hyperthyroidism. This may be achieved by inhibiting thyroglobulin hydrolase, preventing the release of free thyroid hormone into the blood, with a fast and strong effect, but not lasting. It temporarily inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones, and the inhibitory effect may disappear after continuous administration, resulting in more severe hyperthyroidism symptoms.

Treatment of endemic goiter: For early stage patients, 1-10 mg/day is given for 1-3 months, with a 30-40 day break. After about 1-2 months, the dosage can be gradually increased to 20-25 mg/day, and the total course of treatment is about 3-6 months.

Gastrointestinal adverse reactions such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain are uncommon. 5. Periarteritis, leukemoid eosinophilia, which is rare.

Precautions

1. Iodide can pass through the placenta, causing abnormal thyroid function and/or thyroid enlargement in the fetus, so it is strictly forbidden for pregnant women to use it. 2. Iodide can be secreted into breast milk, which can easily cause rashes in infants and suppress thyroid function, so women should not use it or stop breastfeeding during breastfeeding. 3. Iodine solution can easily cause rashes in infants and young children, affecting thyroid function, so it should be forbidden.

Drug Interactions

1. When used in combination with antithyroid drugs, it may cause hypothyroidism and goiter. 2. When used in combination with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or potassium-sparing diuretics, it is easy to cause hyperkalemia, and blood potassium should be monitored. 3. When used in combination with lithium salts, it may cause hypothyroidism and goiter. 4. When used in combination with 131I, it will reduce the uptake of 131I by thyroid tissue.
