Leukemia was first identified by German pathologist Rudolf Virchow in 1847. Leukemia patients overproduce immature white blood cells, which interferes with other work of the bone marrow, which reduces the bone marrow's ability to produce other blood cells. Leukemia can spread to the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, central nervous system and other organs.
