leukemia
Leukemia was first identified by German pathologist Rudolf Virchow in 1847. The cause of leukemia is the abnormal functioning of the hematopoietic tissue in the bone marrow due to mutations in the DNA in the cells. Stem cells in the bone marrow can produce thousands of red and white blood cells every day. Leukemia patients overproduce immature white blood cells, which interferes with other work of the bone marrow, which reduces the bone marrow's ability to produce other blood cells. Leukemia can spread to the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, central nervous system and other organs.
