Respiratory bronchiolitis interstitial lung disease
Respiratory bronchiolitis-associated interstitial lung disease (RBILD) was first recognized in the early 1980s. All patients were smokers or former smokers. Initially, it was considered to be a disease similar to desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP) in terms of pathology; however, it is now believed that RBILD and DIP are manifestations of different degrees of severity of small airway and lung parenchymal damage caused by smoking, that is, two different outcomes of the same disease; some even advocate that RBILD should replace DIP. There is no consensus on this.
