Function and Efficacy

Artemisia selengensis is a sesquiterpene lactone drug with a target=_blank oxygen group extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine Artemisia selengensis. Its effect on the ultrastructure of the erythrocytic stage of Plasmodium malariae is mainly the change of the membrane structure of the parasite. The drug first acts on the food vacuole membrane, the surface membrane, mitochondria, and the endoplasmic reticulum. In addition, it also has a certain effect on the chromatin in the nucleus. It is suggested that the mode of action of artemisia selengensis is mainly to interfere with the function of the surface membrane-mitochondria. It may be that artemisia selengensis acts on the food vacuole membrane, thereby blocking the earliest stage of nutrient intake, causing the parasite to starve for amino acids faster, quickly forming autophagic vacuoles, and continuously excreting them from the parasite, causing the parasite to lose a large amount of cytoplasm and die. The intake of tritium-labeled target=_blank isoleucine by Plasmodium falciparum cultured in vitro also shows that its initial mode of action may be to inhibit the synthesis of protozoan proteins.

Indication

It is mainly used for symptom control of Plasmodium vivax malaria and Plasmodium falciparum malaria, and for the treatment of chloroquine-resistant strains. It can also be used to treat severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria, such as cerebral and icteric malaria. It can also be used to treat systemic lupus erythematosus and discoid lupus erythematosus.

Usage and Dosage

Oral administration: 1g for the first dose, 0.5g after 6-8 hours, 0.5g on the second and third days. 3 days is one course of treatment. Deep intramuscular injection: 200mg for the first dose, 100mg after 6-8 hours, 100mg on the second and third days, 500mg in total; 300mg/day for intramuscular injection for 3 consecutive days, 900mg in total. Children: 15mg/kg, complete the injection within 3 days according to the above method.

Adverse Reactions

1 Mild nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, etc., can quickly return to normal without treatment. 2 When the injection site is shallow, it is easy to cause local pain and lumps. 3 Some patients may experience transient elevation of transaminase and mild rash. 4 Use with caution in women in early pregnancy.

1. This product must be used in combination with primaquine to cure vivax malaria. 2. It has a synergistic effect when used in combination with trimethoprim and can reduce recent relapse or recurrence.
