The use and distribution of naphthalene varies from country to country. About 70% is used for the production of phthalic anhydride, about 15% for dye intermediates and rubber additives, about 6% for insecticides, and about 4% for tanning agents. The United States uses a large proportion of pesticides, mainly for the production of carbaryl. Using naphthalene as raw material, various intermediates can be prepared through unit operations such as sulfonation, nitration, reduction, amination, and hydrolysis. The application of refined naphthalene is still widening.
