Description

Pyrimethamine is a white crystalline powder; odorless and tasteless. It is slightly soluble in ethanol or chloroform and almost insoluble in water.

Pyrimethamine can inhibit the dihydrofolate reductase of Plasmodium vivax, thus interfering with the normal folic acid substitution of Plasmodium vivax, which is effective against Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium falciparum pre-erythrocytic stage, and is often used as etiological prophylaxis. In addition, it can also inhibit the development of Plasmodium in mosquitoes, so it can interrupt transmission. It is used clinically for malaria prophylaxis and anti-relapse treatment in the resting phase.
