Huperzine A is a substance extracted from a plant called Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata).

Historically, Chinese club moss has been used for medicinal purposes, with one of its main uses being to help clear the mind. Modern research into huperzine A for brain support and function lend credence to this traditional usage.

It is a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and NMDA receptor antagonist that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Sold as a dietary supplement, huperzine A is might used as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

Huperzine A is a cholinesterase inhibitor which thought to be beneficial for problems with memory, loss of mental abilities (dementia), and the muscular disorder myasthenia gravis because it causes an increase in the levels of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is one of the most abundant neurotransmitters in the human body. It can be found in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Acetylcholine is one of the chemicals that our nerves use to communicate in the brain, muscles, and other areas.

There are some researches suggests that taking huperzine A by mouth for up to 8 weeks may improve memory, mental function, and behavior in people with conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia.
