Huperzine A is a natural plant alkaloid extracted from *Huperzia serrata*, a plant belonging to the *Huperzia* genus used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a potent, reversible, and highly selective second-generation acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is slightly soluble in water, highly lipophilic, and has a small molecular size, allowing it to readily cross the blood-brain barrier. After entering the central nervous system, it is primarily distributed in brain regions closely associated with learning and memory, such as the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and hippocampus. At low doses, it strongly inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE), significantly increasing the concentration of acetylcholine (ACh) in the synaptic clefts of these brain regions. This enhances neuronal excitation transmission, strengthens the excitatory activity in learning and memory areas of the brain, and thus improves cognitive function, enhances memory retention, and promotes memory recall. It is currently the most successful drug developed in China for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia).
